چکیده
The terms “¿ macrocosm― and “¿ microcosm― have been taken by Jung from the traditions of the alchemists and the philosophy of Leibnitz for expressing his theories, but they are not often used elsewhere in psychiatry or psychology so it may be as well to define them when introducing them here.* The macrocosm is the entire universe around us, with everything in it. It is also the orderly system of relationships connecting all parts to gether from the greatest to the smallest: the relationships between nebulae, stars and planets, between animal and vegetable life on earth, between nations and persons in societies, between organisms and micro-organisms, be tween molecules, atoms, subatomic particles and charges. The microcosm is the private universe of one individual, including all the people, the places and the things he knows or thinks about, his occupation, his amusements, the books he reads, his other regular or occasional activities, and so on. He sees himself as one of the elements in this universe. It is of course far more limited than the macrocosm; there are vast areas hidden away in the shadows of ignorance, uncertainty and forgetfulness or distorted by prejudice and egocentricity. The elements of a private universe are linked by a system of private relationships—feelings of affection, loyalty, de sire, interest, indifference, hostility, fear, self regarding feelings and so on. Each one of us must be perfectly well aware that he has, or perhaps one ought to say he is, a microcosm very much isolated and distinct. No
